Color Me Kona: The World's Largest Coloring Project

Other elements include a skateboarding contest, demos and clinic, tie-dye factory, vegan food village, balloon pool party, art installations, live music, and the unveiling of the new Snake Run mural by artist Halsi. Installation artists include Shannon Rose Greene, MadreGabs, Nico, Halsi, Parker Burrer, Bobby K, and Amanda Holloway with her students from James Weldon Johnson Middle School.

Community Building Through Public Art

The mural, which was designed by students from James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School and their art teacher, Amanda Holloway, was inspired by Taylor Richardson, a 7th grade student at The Boles School who has aspirations of becoming a scientist, engineer, and an astronaut. Richardson recently raised over $100,000 through a crowdsourcing campaign to sponsor 1,000 young girls to see Disney's “A Wrinkle in Time” in theaters at no expense.

College prep students gain creative confidence through public art

Students Play the Market J.W. Johnson Kids Win Top Stock Spots

Despite going up against numerous high schools, four teams from James Weldon Johnson Middle School captured the top four spots in a "Stock Market Simulation" competition recently.

Seven other James Weldon Johnson teams finished in the top 20 among teams competing in the Northeast Florida Region of the contest, sponsored by the Florida Council on Economic Education.

Dayna Yarbrough's classroom is a busy place first thing in the morning. The children filing in and getting caught up on their gossipy updates are energy enough, but it was her fellow teachers coming in and out that added to the positive energy in the room. One teacher came in to touch base and pick up the extra cupcakes they had shared with students the day before. Another stopped by for help with a poem that she was going to teach that day, and the substitute teacher who had come to take over for the day waited patiently to see if Yarbrough would actually go home.

Yarbrough is more than an English teacher - she has become a resource.

AKA Presents History Book in College Prep

An autographed eighth edition of the AKA’s history book: Priceless Pearls-Dimensions of Sisterhood and Service in Alpha Kappa Alpha, was presented to the principal and staff of James Weldon Johnson College Prep last week.

From the Earth to the Sky; Grant and Volunteers Give 83 Trees a Home on Middle School Campus

Jackson Chabot will be a middle-aged man by the time the trees he helped plant Saturday on the grounds of James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School reach their maturity.

But the 13-year-old seventh-grader said just planting 83 saplings made a big difference. "It looks a lot better than before," he said.

Surf's Up at JWJ Middle

Three middle school students are making a documentary about the Jacksonville area's surfing community.

The students, members of a video and production class at James Weldon Johnson Middle School in downtown Jacksonville, started producing the wave-riding documentary last month. The project is tentatively titled Fluid Groove: The Jacksonville Surf Scene, an homage to the Jacksonville Beach-based Internet site Fluidgroove.net, which is a message board for local surfers.

Circuit Judge Eric Roberson’s preparation for bench began in middle school.

Judge Eric Roberson didn’t know it at the time, but he began preparing for his seat on the 4th Judicial Circuit bench not long after he graduated from Oceanway Elementary School.

The next school year marked the beginning of the Duval County Public Schools magnet program, and he was accepted to James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School.

“That was one of the biggest breaks I’ve caught in life,” said Roberson, 37, who was appointed to the circuit bench by Gov. Rick Scott on June 5 after serving for two years as a Duval County judge.

Teacher overcomes stroke to be named one of four 2015 Gladys Prior Award recipients

Mollie Peterson knows the difference a year can make.

This time last year, the 33-year-old James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School teacher was in a hospital bed wondering when she’d see her class, again.

“Last year, I had a stroke caused by a vertebral artery dissection, which is something I had never heard of before it happened,” Peterson said.

Middle School Students Qualify for Spot in National Contest; Trio from James Weldon Johnson Will Take Part in National History Day Fair in Washington

Whether from overhearing a documentary on The History Channel or wanting to learn more about their heritage, three students at James Weldon Johnson Middle School were inspired to go above and beyond the call for a social studies class assignment.

After qualifying at the state level in Tallahassee May 5, eighth-graders Zach Holem and Duncan Galler and sixth-grader Andrew Galler are heading to Washington, D.C., in June for the National History Day Fair.

In a recent letter, Bush congratulated school Principal Marilyn Myrick for challenging her school to improve its Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test score. Myrick said she challenged the school to improve by 15 points, but the school actually improved by 28.

Students like to Go to 'Readers Beach'; at James Weldon Johnson, They Just Have to Read to Get There

Lynne Lacey was already soaked Friday morning as she taunted eighth-graders lining up to sink her in the dunking booth.

Ponytail dripping on the history teacher's T-shirt, she pointed to where the James Weldon Johnson Middle School students had to throw to drop her in the drink.

"Come on, aim higher," she yelled.

The dunking booth was one of six attractions at the school's 12th annual Readers Beach Party, held for the 900 out of 1,058 students who reached or exceeded the Jacksonville school's 3,750-pages-per-teen reading goal this year.

One of those was eighth-grader Lauren Fernandez.

Cummer invites children to create own car designs

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens hosted an afternoon of art for students ages 7 to 13. Six children had the undivided attention of artist Michael Viafora, who guided the students in creating car designs using watercolor, tempera paint and colored pencils.

Jacksonville University's first female student earns submarine officer post

The first woman from the Jacksonville University Naval Reserve Officer Training Corp has earned a post as a submarine warfare officer. As a goal oriented woman she is joining an elite club. Chalkley is a long time Jacksonville resident and has attended Hendricks Avenue Elementary, James Weldon Johnson middle school, Stanton College Prep and currently Jacksonville University.

Little did Mollie Peterson, English teacher at James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School, know what she was getting herself into earlier this past spring when she wondered aloud to the Scholar Bowl team whether there were other competitions in which they could enter.

Leave it to Walker Miller, eighth grade student and Avondale resident, to find out.

“It didn’t take Walker 24 hours to find out all the information about other competitions,” said Mollie. “He had all the details, qualifications, entry fees, for the regionals and the national competition and thought it might be a good idea. I thought it was a wonderful idea.”
