• Third Grade

Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

We would like to welcome your child to third grade!  We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new school year.  The third-grade teachers want you to know about some of the interesting subjects that your child will be exploring this year.

In reading, we will work on skills and strategies such as predicting and inferring, questioning, determining the author’s viewpoint, and drawing conclusions.  In language arts, we will be writing to a source. Reading and writing subjects will be connected. Math will take us on a journey exploring multiplication, division, fractions, rounding, elapsed time, measurement, and geometry.  Through science exploration, your child will be learning about Earth and space, the properties of matter, energy, plants, and animals.  In social studies, we will be learning about communities, citizenship, and the United States government.

This is a very important year for your child because they will be taking a standardized test for the first time.  Third graders are tested in the subjects of reading and mathematics.  They must pass the reading portion for promotion to 4th grade.

As a third-grade student, your child will begin working towards meeting the third-grade standard: reading 30-chapter books during the school year.  We encourage you to begin this goal by exploring the public library this summer.  Books that are read over the summer can count towards meeting the 30-chapter book goal.  Remember that chapter books should be “just right” books, not too easy and not too hard.

All students will be in a team-teach situation where one teacher teaches reading, writing, and social studies while the other teaches math and science.  We hope it will be a great experience for your child. Our Meet and Greet is scheduled for Friday, August 11th, from 1:00-2:00 PM. We look forward to working with you and your child next year.  We hope you and your family have a safe and wonderful summer!

    Sincerely,

    Third Grade Teachers
